Risorgive del Vinchiaruzzo
The Vinchiaruzzo Springs consist of 1,000 hectares and tributary canals of the Meduna river (Rio Brusà, the Roial, the Stuarta del Gravos vein and the Mulignana).
The springs originate from high plain rainwater that infiltrates deep into the earth’s surface and as it finds increasing difficulty in flowing through less permeable subsoil, the confined water levels rise and surge to the surface.
The water comes from natural depressions in the ground both by simply rising from the subsoil or by “pot”-like pressure. The most unique “pots” are those that are sandy and have a particular effect on the bottom, continuously moved by the waterflow with a boiling-type movement. In winter, the landscape is truly fascinating with steam rising from the water mirror, solidifying and falling in a soft rime, which is a formation of white ice needles and scales that create unrealistic figures on vegetation, even at several meters from the ground. The distribution of ground flora is influenced by the changing conditions of soil moisture, which in turn depends on the seasonal weather trend on the high plains. The aquatic fauna has greatly reduced in recent years; as far as birds are concerned both nesting and transient birds can be seen. Small mammals such as weasels, marten, moles, hedgehogs and squirrels also live in these areas.
Compared to a few decades ago the poor land (called Magredi) and the area of the springs have significantly contracted as a consequence of increasing human activities in these places and the birth of new agricultural and industrial activities. Nevertheless, they remain true paradises just outside the city for lovers of nature, wildlife and photography; a unique and almost wild environment on the edge of urban life.
