From elegant Venetian architecture to the cradle of temporal power in Western Friuli
The route begins in SACILE at the Town Hall in PIAZZA del POPOLO (km 0.00) as we cross the elegant square in the direction of the bridge over the Livenza River called Ponte della Vittoria built in 1925. We go over the bridge and, following the one-way street we continue along via G. Garibaldi and then along viale G. Lacchin; at the traffic light we proceed straight on, past the level crossing and onto a bicycle path, toward indications for Brugnera. We arrive at the Borgo Shiavoi and turn right in the direction of Vistorta along the street of the same name; we continue in that main street and at the second crossing we go left into Strada Vizze until the STOP sign; there we turn to the left along the Strada Campagne until the next STOP sign at the crossing with Provincial Road 15 (km 3.70).
We cross over, “paying attention to the busy street”, and heading in the direction of Cavolano we pass the parish church of the same name; the lane curves to the right, and we continue along passing under the Mestre-Trieste A28 motorway, until the STOP sign, where we turn right into strada San Giovanni di Livenza, in the direction of the Gaiarine district; we reach the roundabout and proceed from the second road until the STOP sign in the BRUGNERA district (km 8.40); we turn left along via Dal Mas in the direction of Brugnera and continue along via Santissima Trinità until the roundabout; we turn right along via Villa Varda di Brugnera and we travel on a bicycle path for about 900 metres and then proceed along a normal street, passing under the bridge of the Provincial Road 15 as we arrive at the entrance to the park of Villa Varda, a 18th-century villa with a large park on the banks of the Livenza River (km 8.40).
We continue along the Provincial Road 67 in via Villa Varda di San Cassiano and we pass the church of San Cassiano with its large square in front of the war memorial; here we turn left and continue along piazza Venezia andvia Cesare Battisti. Then, at the end of the residential area of San CASSIANO, we turn right into via Roverefollowing the indications for Portobuffolè and Oderzo, (we are in the important Furniture district), we pass in front of two factories on our right, while in front of the second ( km 13.80) we turn left into via Frascada. We follow this road, narrow and tortuous, and at the first crossing we keep to the right until we reach the STOP sign in the le Monde District in the busy Pordenone-Oderzo Provincial Road 35 “paying attention to the busy street”; we cross carefully and continue straight along via G. Garibaldi which passes amidst furniture factories and vineyards until a STOP sign where we turn left into via Palazzetto, a narrow road between two guardrails “paying attention to the busy street” with its heavy traffic.
We travel along this road for about 700 metres until we see a large furniture factory on our left and, carefully, we turn right into a dirt road that runs along the banks of the Livenza River. While enjoying the view of the fields on the right side of several stretches of the river, on the left side we see the bell tower of GHIRANO as we reach via Tremeacquewith a bridge over the Livenza on the right and a bridge on the Meduna on the left (km 19.70). We cross over the second bridge and at the end “carefully” we turn right into a road with a natural bed that follows the embankment of the Livenza River; we turn left in the direction of a farmer’s house and, having crossed a small bridge, we turn left along a natural beaten path until the STOP sign for via San Martino, at the end of the dirt road (km 21.40).
We turn right into an asphalt street in the direction of the Traffe district and at the crossing we turn left along via Bronzette di Rivarotta following indications for the Pasiano district; we proceed passing by the district of Pozzo until a roundabout (km 24.80) and from the third exit we continue toward Pasiano in via Roma until a crossing where we turn right, toward the district of Azzanello, along via Pasiano di Sotto, we turn left along via Comugnuzze ( km 25.60) and we follow a lane that bends slightly to the left along the viale del Tigli until the STOP sign where we turn right along via Falzago in the direction of the cemetery of Pasiano di Pordenone. After the cemetery the road curves first the left and then to the right and then again to the left and finally to the right toward Azzanello until a STOP sign in the Case Moschetta district where we turn left along via Santa Maria and at the next STOP sign we turn left along via Santa Rosalia following indications for Azzano X and then “carefully” at number 37 we turn right into via Prados (km 30.40) and after about 900 metres we turn right along via Pradosa, passing a bridge over the Sile River in the Case Panigai district.
Then we turn left into via Castello, we pass in front of the church of San Bartolomeo di Panigai with its frescoes from the 16th century, we reach a fork and continue along the main road via Ornedi in the direction of Chions; at the shrine to the Madonna we turn right along via Orneda where, after a stretch of dirt road an asphalt street begins, and at the end of the street there is a roundabout; we continue to the right along via Santa Caterina toward the locale of Azzano X, where we reach the roundabout of the square in the town of CHIONS where we will take via San Giorgio (km 35.70) in the direction of Azzano X, and at the end of the street we turn right onto a bicycle path along via Pasubio(with a detour of 50 metres toward the church of San Giorgio with its Renaissance frescoes), at the end of via Pasubiowe turn right and then immediately left into via Trieste “by bicycle” and at the end we turn left along via G.Verdi until the STOP sign ( km 36.90).
We cross the lane “paying attention to the busy street” and we continue along via Gorizia, we turn left along via Gerosa and then right into via Aquileia at the end of which we find a crossing along the regional border between Friuli and Venetia and we turn left into via Friuli which after a curve to the left crosses via Venezia, but we continue along via Friuli until we reach a wide open square; there we turn right into via Livenza and reach the crossing with the State Road 251; we turn left northward into the State Road and after about 70 metres we keep right entering via Basedo.
We reach the STOP sign in the Settimo district (km 43.80); we turn left into via Udine and after the underpass for the A28 motorway we arrive in the Marignana district; we turn right along via Giotto da Bondone in the direction of Sesto al Reghena; after passing a small bridge there begins a foot and bicycle path and at the end of the path we cross a lane on the opposite side and continue left along via degli Olmi for several dozen metres, where we reach a crossing we turn right along via Giotto and we follow the directions for the 18th-century Benedictine Abbey; we pass a bridge on the Lemene River and we reach SESTO AL REGHENA in PIAZZA CARDINALE BARBO dominated by the powerful tower and abbey (km 47.70).
